Women’s Week Deemed “Success” – Leftover Muffins Beg to Differ

Katrine Kranstad

Women’s week, organised by the VUWSA Women’s Group, took place from Monday to Thursday last week. VUWSA’s Women’s Rights Officer Caroline Prendergast says the Women’s Group overcame financial and organisational setbacks to hold several events, with attendance that varied considerably.
Daily discussion sessions were held for international students, post-graduate women, queer women and Maori women to provide a private an informal space for the “sharing of thoughts about women’s issues.”
Monday’s Parent and Child Afternoon Tea was described as “awesome” due to its strong social value. During the meeting, parents of both genders got a chance to fill in the NZUSA Parents’ Survey, a nationwide survey of the pros and cons of parenthood and student demands. Entries in the first Annual VUWSA Women’s Group Erotic Fiction awards generated laughter from the audience, and were followed by a product demonstration by adult retailer D-VICE.
The week’s main attraction, the Thursdays in Black concert featuring Anika Moa, finished up Women’s Week. Exact ticket sales are unknown, but Prendergast says she expects the event to break even.
