The Women’s Room, located by the VUWSA Student Media Centre, was trashed last Tuesday.
Publications were put in the rubbish bin, and some of the readings provided were torn before being placed in the rubbish. Much of the material binned was about abortion rights and feminism.
A pro-choice book entitled Abortion Then and Now: New Zealand Abortion Stories from 1940 to 1980 was stolen from the room, dismaying VUWSA Women’s Officer Necia Johnston.
Necia has worked hard this year to make the Women’s Room inviting and to ensure that new resources are available to those who use
the room.
“I just don’t understand why someone would do this,” Necia said.
Salient co-editor Elle Hunt reported that she heard people in the room at about 12pm that day. However, it is unlikely that the case will be resolved.
The Women’s Room is available for any woman to use and is equipped with couches and reading material.
