You are students, and therefore poor. So long as the government refuses to recognise that $155 is simply not enough to live in Wellington on, you’d better: A) be supported by your parents; B) have some money tucked away somewhere, or; C) work. Sucks for you if it’s C.
This is not ideal, but it need not be the end of the world. Recognising that any spare money you have is probably going to be spent on booze, here are some places where, due to being a student, you can pay less for things. Things that you need.
Party.
Banks
All the main banks offer special student accounts with no/low fees and interest-free overdraft.
BNZ also offers a student card, which gets discounts at various places.
Books
Dymocks offer 10% off.
VicBooks occasionally has choice specials.
Not really books, but Gordon Harris has discounts on most things.
Clothing
Fusion on Cuba offers 10% off.
Most boutique stores will give you a discount of some kind. Just ask, and be prepared to haggle.
Computing
There are cheap computers and software available from the store in Maclaurin on campus.
Entertainment
All the cinemas offer special discounts for students.
Reading and Regent on Manners also have much cheaper movies on Tuesdays.
Circa, Downstage, BATS and Gryphon all offer discounts.
Westpac Stadium does too.
Most videostores have special student discounts some night of the week or other.
All Ticketek classical concerts (and lots of other things I presume) have student rush tickets on sale on the day of the concert.
Foods
Both kebab houses on Cuba St have $1 off any kebab.
Some (but not all, frustratingly) Subway franchises offer a free drink with any sub.
Chill on Willis offer $2 student coffees.
Wholly Bagels offer 25% off after 2.30pm on weekdays.
Health
Student Health is cheap for students, and free if you register them as your GP.
Most other places will give discounts for students, dentists especially.
Travel
STA travel has special deals for students.
Intercity Coachlines offer special discounts.
Also
If you’re buying pretty much anything expensive, at least ask. The worst that could happen is they’ll say no, the best: you’ll save shitloads of money.
Not a student discount, but www.vouchermate.co.nz has pretty good offers on a semi-regular basis.
A Community Services Card (which most students will be eligible for, apply through WINZ) gives you discounts on Council-run things. Like the library and swimming pools.
Also it makes prescriptions and doctor’s appointments cheaper.
