I’m a bit of an inspiration junkie when it comes to most things, and films are no exception. If I look like a ‘70s rock chick one morning, you know I’ve watched The Runaways the night before. The next day if I’m in a heavy skirt, I’m bound to have watched Lady L. This is why I love that current trends are influenced by various movie genres this season.
Reservior Dogs’ music and fashion are suprisingly cool. The Mister’s suits are a cultural trademark through their hip simplicity. Guys can never go wrong with dark sunnies, skinny black ties, white fitted shirts, and a classic suit—who cares about occasion or practicality.
The Sound of Music’s glass house scene is more for the girls. Pastel pleats in light fabrics are like a dream and Juliette Hogan and Lonely Hearts know this. Even Maria’s carpet ensembles can make a comeback. TV’s carpet-inspired dress is a case in point, as are draped ensembles like Cavalli and Marine Skillings.
White is a must-have for spring. Casablanca embraced white costuming, which shone on screen against the dust and black and white film. Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa brings out the romance of white and Bogart’s Rick the slick smart. Ilsa’s silky suit and two-pieces are seen in Ruffian and Jason Wu’s white indulgence. This season white is innocent in ADAM, but it can also be edgy like in Herve Leger’s collection.
The latest prep look has a number of sources, and it is always a bit of fun. It’s retro when McFly goes back in Back to the Future. Who knew something as small as socks could be so big? There are no more Breakfast Club high school cliques, so as now everyone can sling a cardigan and jersey over their shoulder and not look like a dweeb. Tommy Hilfiger and Lacoste have always been fans.
A more recent look could be inspired by Mean Girls. Football tops and jackets are currently acceptable, and not just for the players, with these found in a lot of vintage stores including Mr. Vintage’s nostalgic tees. Caution though—I’m not prepared to promote tartan skirts, but tartan can work in other combinations.
My favourite teen movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, is back in fashion. The 90s grunge trend has become it’s own fashion recreation. Nom*D is fashion forward with this, as is Decjuba. Rachel Gilbert amps up the glam in her take and Guess goes retro. Wild Fox plays with the era’s fashion dont’s to suprisingly create dos. Band t-shirts always go with ripped jeans, however, crimped hair and deep purple lips should be done in moderation.
