Aro Valley residents found themselves up the proverbial creek without a paddle last month—literally.
Wellington City Council had several calls on the afternoon of February 25 reporting raw sewage leaking onto the street.
“It was like someone had shat right in front of you… all down the street. It was like the contents of the world’s biggest toilet had leaked onto Adams Terrace,” said a student.
“I had to cover my mouth with clothing because of the smell,” said another.
Workers had located the blockage and cleared it by the morning of February 27, but residents complained that action had not been taken fast enough.
“It was just as bad on the Saturday as it was on the Friday—I don’t know what they were doing all that time,” said one.
Wellington City Council blames a blockage caused by tree roots growing into a pipe. They had no comment about the time taken to fix the problem.
