A recent research project by a final year Victoria PhD student has revealed that young Muslims are happier in NZ than in the UK.
Jaimee Stuart’s study examined the well-being, psychological symptoms, behavioural problems, discrimination and immigration stress of approximately 300 Muslim youths, aged 16-27, in both countries.
Surveys in New Zealand produced more positive statistics on almost all indicators (showing lower levels of discrimination and immigration stress), despite having stronger religious identities, practicing their religion more and dealing with an increase in discrimination.
Stuart concluded that New Zealand Muslims perceptions of living in a more inclusive society contribute to these better outcomes.
